چکیده

Context Ammonia (NH3) volatilisation can be a significant nitrogen (N) loss pathway in the grains industry following surface broadcast application of urea. However, extent urea from acidic soils and soil properties that regulate this N have not been investigated widely. Aims We conducted laboratory incubation experiment to measure NH3 potential prills (1–2 mm diameter; 50 kg ha−1) onto moistened neutral cropping soils, sampled four long-term research sites. Methods The selected varied pH, clay content, organic carbon, pH buffering capacity (pHBC) cation exchange capacity. Volatilised was captured phosphoric acid trap after 7, 14 21 days then measured using colorimetric analysis. compared losses with predicted derived an existing empirical prediction model. Key results Of applied urea-N, 0.9–25% volatilised. Cumulative were strongly related (R2 = 0.77) pHBC pedotransfer function. model generally had poor predictive (RMSE 34%). Conclusions Using content as surrogate variable for sandy kaolinitic where it is largely function carbon cause estimates potential. Implications Grain production on sandy, low could lead substantial if broadcast.

Modulation of sheep ruminal urea transport by ammonia and pH.

Ruminal fermentation products such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and CO2 acutely stimulate urea transport across the ruminal epithelium in vivo, whereas ammonia has inhibitory effects. Uptake and signaling pathways remain obscure. The ruminal expression of SLC14a1 (UT-B) was studied using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The functional short-term effects of ammonia on cytosolic pH (pHi) and...

Urease Activity, Ammonia Volatilisation and Related Microbiological Aspects in Some South African Soils

Urease activity of various soils was indexed employing toluene sterile and non-sterile soils. The two methods indicated that part played by microorganisms. Apparatus used, soil depth, increment, depth of placement and pattern distributions are discussed in relation to volatile loss as are influences of soil moisture, reaction, temperature and drying-out. Urea on trash benefits fungi but invaria...

Autotrophic ammonia oxidation at low pH through urea hydrolysis.

Ammonia oxidation in laboratory liquid batch cultures of autotrophic ammonia oxidizers rarely occurs at pH values less than 7, due to ionization of ammonia and the requirement for ammonium transport rather than diffusion of ammonia. Nevertheless, there is strong evidence for autotrophic nitrification in acid soils, which may be carried out by ammonia oxidizers capable of using urea as a source ...
